Laurin M. Haupt - Author
A Miracle at Dachau
In her new book, A Miracle at Dachau, first time author, Laurin Haupt tells the riveting story of her grandfather (her Opa) and his time in the Dachau prison camp. A French gentile, Simon Johann Haupt lived a happy life in Germany with his wife and daughters, the loves of his life. But in 1933, he and some friends dared to resist the terrorism of the Third Reich that was destroying the fabric of their peaceful community.
His subsequent arrest and imprisonment and the miracle that saved his life is one of the most compelling stories of that awful period in history.
Most of us were taught of the atrocities of Hitler and his force against the Jews of Germany but little is talked about regarding the way members of The Third Reich turned against anyone that dared defy them, regardless of religious beliefs. Those that joined with Hitler went up against friends, neighbors, shop keepers, even catholic priests they had known their whole lives for having the courage to stand up for what was right.
Opa slowly unfolds his unique story to his beloved granddaughter Laurin as they travel through the German countryside by train many, many years after his time at Dachau. This is a book that everyone should read, and Simon’s story is a cautionary tale for us all.
Laurin is working on a young adult novel set to come out this summer and the sequel to A Miracle at Dachau that will chronicle her Opa's work resisting the Nazi's once released from Dachau.
She is happy to have realized her lifelong dream of becoming a published author.

“History books don’t often talk about the spirit of the unknown hero, and they remain unrecognized shadows in our past unless we talk about them and make them known.”
Those words, spoken from her grandfather, compelled Laurin to make sure others knew what he had experienced firsthand.
“Every one of us that stood up to Hitler paid a heavy price. There were many a good man that sat back and did nothing, maybe they felt helpless, afraid, I don’t know, ” said Johann Haupt.
“My grandfather remained a dignified Frenchman to the very end, standing up for what he believed in. As he shared his experiences with me on a long train ride we took in Germany, other passengers heard his story, and they too were overcome with emotion upon hearing some of the more gruesome details. I just knew his story had to be written down and shared with the world. I’m now working on the sequel to this book because there is more that he shared with regarding what happened after he was released from Dachau.”
Laurin Haupt is available to speak about her grandfather’s experiences as a political prisoner.
